Many many many of us are asking this question because we are getting a little weary of travelling and constantly seeking to belong.

The paradox of choice: the more options you have,

The paradox of choice: the more options you have, the harder it is to choose. This isn’t just a feeling, it’s neuroscience.

When you have 2-3 options, your brain can evaluate them. When you have 20+ options (Sydney, Lisbon, Bali, Mexico City, Porto, Chiang Mai, Da Nang...), your prefrontal cortex gets overloaded.

Too many options trigger decision fatigue. Your brain can’t process all the variables (cost, climate, community, culture, career opportunities). So it avoids deciding altogether.

Plus: with unlimited options, the opportunity cost of choosing feels massive. “What if I choose Sydney and Porto would have been better?” Your brain perceives choosing as loss (of all other options).

So you research. Compare. Make spreadsheets. Ask in Facebook groups. And you still can’t choose.

Because when everything is possible, nothing feels right.

Your brain is waiting for one option to be obviously superior to reduce the cognitive load of deciding.

But that clarity never comes. Because certainty doesn’t come before the decision. It comes after.

You won’t know if it’s “the right place” until you commit and build there.
